Pangong Lake or Pangong Tso is the literal meaning of a Tibetan word “Bangong Cuo” which means “High Grassland Lake”. It is situated at an altitude of 14,270 feet above sea level and at a distance of about 150 Km from Leh and can be reached in about 5 hours’ drive.

“The road crosses the villages of Shey and Gya and criss-crosses the Chang La at 17600 ft which makes it the third highest motorable road in the world. Chang La got its due name from a shrine dedicated to Chang La Baba. When you manoeuvre down the road it passes through Tangste and a crossing river called Pagal Naala or “The Crazy Stream”.
The beauty of the lake is its ability to change the colour which surely will enchant you by its charm. The initial glimpse of this fascinating lake and its blue waters is enough to cast a permanent imprint on your mind. The real reason to visit this place is for its beauty and magnificence but if you are looking for any adventure the only option is to camp on the shores of the lake and bless your cameras with delightful pictures. For the record, Pangong lake also featured in the final scenes of the famous Bollywood movie “3 Idiots”.
